How to Become a Better Writer (Part 3)

“Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.” – Thomas Huxley

This quote is perfect for what we are going to be talking about in the third and final part of our series on becoming a better writer. As Huxley points out, learning is something that we should be trying to do all of the time. For the purpose of this specific article, we’re talking about learning about becoming a better writer. As writing has evolved over the last few centuries, so too has the tools that can help writers become better at their craft. The internet has provided us with an influx of resources and information that can help anyone and everyone become a better writer.

Take Advantage of Resources

There are an absolutely endless amount of resources out there that can help you to become a better writer. Searching for the best ones for your specific type of writing may be difficult, but something can certainly be learned from any resource. For this article, we’re going to link you to a few resources that can help you no matter what type of writer you are.

Commitment to Learning

As Thomas Huxley said, writers should ‘try to learn something about everything and everything about something.’ Doing this requires a commitment to learning over a long period of time. As a writer, there will never be a time when you reach a point where you’ve maximized your full potential as a writer. That is one of the true beauties of being a writer, that you’ll never actually be done improving and growing.

Take what you’ve learned throughout this three part series and re-dedicate yourself to a life filled with reading, writing, and learning. The incredible progress that you’ll begin to see when this dedication takes place will surely help you realize the power that these three areas will have on helping you to becoming a better writer. Not only that, but you’ll also begin to realize the power that a commitment to these three areas will also have on your life as a whole.

How to Become a Better Writer (Part 2)

In the second part of this three article series, we’ll speak briefly about the importance of actually writing in order to become a better writer. We’ll also quickly review how you can avoid writer’s block while simplifying the process of writing consistently.

Write and Write and Write

Regardless of what you do as far as reading and learning, the only way that you’ll truly be able to become a better writer is to put the pen to the paper – or, of course, the fingers to the keyboard. Of the three things that we’re talking about in this three article series, nothing is more important the the act of actually writing. Doing so consistently will allow you to develop by leaps and bounds as a writer.

PD James, an English fiction crime writer, gave her piece of advice for writing by saying:

“Don’t just plan to write – write. It is only by writing, not dreaming about it, that we develop our own style.”

It is important to realize the power of those words. So many times writers will get caught in a trance of trying to plan what they want to write and it leads to nothing more than analysis paralysis. There needs to be direct dedication to putting the pen to the paper, no matter what ends up coming from it.

Avoiding Writer’s Block

Writer’s block tends to come from a desire from writers to be perfect with everything that they write. Therefore, the only way to avoid continuous writer’s block is to stop finding it necessary to be perfect with your writing. Edits can and will be done to improve upon the writing once it’s finished but there is absolutely no reason to stress yourself through the process by trying to get everything right the first time.

One of the practices that many writers use for getting through writer’s block is to freewrite about a specific topic for anywhere from 5-10 minutes. Don’t worry about grammatical mistakes or sentence structure, just write continuously. Once you’ve completed this exercise the words that you’ve written will often provide ideas for developing your writing or may even be able to be restructured and used in your writing.

Dedication to Consistent Writing

As we’ve mentioned, a dedication to consistent writing is the most important part of becoming a better writer. It always amazes me to think about how hard writers make this concept. They feel that writing everyday is such a daunting and impossible task when, really, it isn’t. What if you dedicated yourself to writing just 1,000 words per day? My guess is that this would generally take you somewhere in the neighborhood of 1-2 hours, possibly even less. Spread out over an entire year this would equate to 356,000 words per year.

Consider that a novel is generally somewhere in the neighborhood of 80,000-110,000 words. That means that writing just 1,000 words a day would be the equivalent of writing 3-4 novels a year. That is a fairly astonishing way to look at it considering most writers spend years developing their books and novels. Dedicating yourself to consistent, daily writing will be absolutely invaluable in your quest to become a better writer.

How to Become a Better Writer (Part 1)

Becoming a better writer is not quite as difficult as most people think. Throughout this article and the ones to follow we’ll be discussing the three main areas that will help all writers improve their abilities. The three areas that we’ll be discussing include reading, writing, and learning. It should be understood that becoming a better writer is a lifelong process that never truly ends. Consistently focusing on these three areas will undoubtedly help you along that process and will surely help you reach your writing goals. To start, let’s talk about the importance that reading plays in becoming a better writer.

Focus on Your Genre

Reading from writers and authors in the specific genre that you’ve chosen to become a writer in will undoubtedly improve your abilities. Doing so gives you the opportunity to see the structure and style that has been successful with them and will give you ideas for how you can branch off of what they’ve done to create your own personal style.

No matter what profession or hobby you’re participating in, learning from those who are best within those professions or hobbies will almost always lead to significant improvement. This is no different with writing. As you read some of the best writers and authors in your genre you’ll be able to develop a better understanding of exactly what can make you successful as well.

Reading to Increase Your Vocabulary

Reading is also the best way for writers to increase their vocabulary. One of the bad habits that many amateur writers get into is that they begin to become quite repetitive with their word usage. This is an issue that can generally only be fixed by expanding upon your vocabulary.

A great practice to incorporate while you’re reading is to have a notebook handy where you can take down any words that you find clever, interesting, or may not know the definition of. Once you’ve built up this list you can then take time to investigate the definitions of those words further while also discovering ways that you can use them within your own writing.

Don’t Be Afraid to Expand Your Horizons

While we have already talked about focusing on your specific type of writing when reading, you certainly don’t want to be afraid to expand your horizons. If you’re a non-fiction writer, reading fiction works can help you to develop creativity and the ability to show imagery successfully. On the other hand, fiction writers can learn how to make points and provide direct information better by reading non-fiction books and articles. While straying too far away can cause confusion, reading outside of your genre or writing style once in awhile is necessary to avoid becoming narrow minded as a writer.

Consistent Reading

You’ll see that consistency will be somewhat of a theme throughout this series. Consistency in all three of the main areas of improvement is important, but this is especially true with reading. A lot of great writers say that they read anywhere between 2-3 hours on a daily basis. It is important that you develop your own routine for daily reading, even if it only involves 20-30 minutes before bed, in order to increase your knowledge base and vocabulary needed to become a better writer.

Eco – friendly Lifestyle

Have you ever thought of living an Eco – friendly Lifestyle? No? Is it because the term conjured up images of living primitively? You couldn’t be farther from the truth.

An Eco – friendly Lifestyle basically means reducing your carbon – footprint, curtailing your usage of resources which are natural and man-made, endorsing ecological supplies and in general making yourself more familiar with a more peaceful co-existence with nature —just as our did preceding to the Revolution of Industries.

How to Live an Eco – Friendly Lifestyle?

Wondering how to go about all of this? In case of foods, you could either purchase or consume locally grown food, or consume foods that aren’t adulterated either with hormones or other pesticides that are hazardous to the nature, purchase fish and meats (every now and then certain vegetables and fruits) from sources that are sustainable. You could even decide to buy foods that use recycled packaging as part of eco-friendly living. You could also grow some vegetables, fruits, spices and herbs in your balconies, terraces or even your kitchen window.  For transportation methods which can be considered eco-friendly could be using hybrid cars, bikes, or deciding to walk or use carpooling facilities. All of these helpin minimizing carbon emissions.  You can consider turning all the lights, fans and like off when not in use or unplugging all the electronic devices when not required; this is also as eco-friendly living.  Thus the ways of living in an Environment friendly life is endless.

What are Benefits of Eco- Friendly Lifestyle?

The benefits of an environment friendly life are limitless. Even a small step can result in impacting in a very big positive effect. One of the basic benefits of living in an environment-friendly way has to be the environment. You must realize that the available space on our planet is finite and if we recklessly keep filling it with ourselves, the emissions, buildings, factories, and houses, we are curtailing the amount of plants and trees, breathable air, clean water, and place to live for our co-inhabitants. Global warming is a great threat and not just a myth, and we need to seriously consider as to how to curtail it.

To grow as individuals as well as the society at large, we would need our environment to be healthy and happy. By poisoning or depleting our resources, our living space, we hurt ourselves and our future generations in the process. If you see the bigger picture, you will realize that if you don’t use resources optimally you will not leave much resources for your kids as well as your grandchildren to have.Opting for simple changes like switching your mode of transportation from using cars or personal vehicles using petrol or diesel you could chose walking or biking. The benefits to both your body and the environment can be double folded. Proactive lifestyle can elevate your moods thereby you can live a happier life.

An environment-friendly lifestyle is all about endorsing existence, and that is not only for us, but for everyone including the animals, birds and our planet too.  The paybacks of living in this eco-friendly  way are limitless; it’s the likely costs of refraining that you really have to be concerned about.
